Ada's Violin

A town built on a landfill. A community in need of hope. A girl with a dream. A man with a vision. An ingenious idea! The recycled orchestra, comprising children from Cateura, Paraguay, playing instruments made from recycled trash, performs concerts all over the world. Here's the story of how it began.

March Shalom Book

The book explains, every person has an invisible bucket and when bad things happen to us water drops out of our bucket which can leave us feeling empty. But, our buckets can be filled again with kindness and love from God and others.

Draw a bucket on a piece of paper and use the following questions to reflect together on how you are doing with the changes related to COVID-19.  Here are four questions to discuss together:

1. How full is my bucket? Color in the bucket to reflect how full you bucket is.

2. What makes my bucket empty? Write down the things that pour water out of your bucket.  Maybe its not seeing friends, fear of sickness, etc.  This is a great opportunity to open up about the changes and fears each person is experiencing.  Parents can model talking openly about it and planning together how to cope.

3. What can fill my bucket? Draw water drops and write in them ideas how your bucket can be filled.  Take this opportunity to discuss what each family member what your needs are during this time of uncertainty.  Discuss ways to meet those needs.  There are some great resources on our COVID-19 page like prayers to color.

4. How can I fill someone else's bucket? Draw more water drops and in a different color write down ideas for how you can help fill someone else's bucket.  Reflect together on who might be lonely, afraid, sick, etc. and brainstorm ideas to encourage them.
  • What is one way I can fill my family member's buckets? (Clue: what did they answer for question #3?)
  • How can I reach out to someone older than me in our congregation and encourage them?
