Maundy Thursday Service
|
Our Maundy Thursday, Service of Shadows, featured passages from the gospel of John as we followed Jesus from the Last Supper to the cross. The days between Jesus death and his resurrection we shadowed days.
There were dark nights, and even darker days. On our way toward rejoicing in the resurrection, we have entered that shadow land, those days of darkness, the darkness that stretched from the upper room to the tomb. We ask ourselves: Will we notice the light, in the midst of so many shadows? Would we notice the light, were it not for the shadows? But consider the triumphant question, Would there be shadows, were it not for the light? It is a time for shadows. But it is also a time for hope. |
Still Celebrating Palm Sunday
During Social Distancing
This year's children's processional was a bit different, but we found a way to still shout Hosanna together!
2020 Lenten Series on Judges
A Lenten Series - The Book of Judges
God’s people are now in the land God promised them. God has delivered the Israelites and when they entered the land with Joshua, they promised full obedience to Him. They couldn’t keep this promise; they were so easily pulled into the religious pluralism of the day. But God keeps coming back to them. When they cry for mercy, God raises a new judge. And for a time, the Israelites obey. Yet even the judges become increasingly flawed and sinful – not quite the heroes our Sunday school stories sometimes make them out to be. In Judges we see a messy people and a merciful God.
We, too, are messy people. The more we confess our messiness and our brokenness the more God’s transformational mercy can shape us into the people God means for us to be. The true hero of the book – and of each of our stories – is God!

When we go through tough times it's important to take time to express our raw emotions; pain fear, anger and grief. All of the raw emotion that you feel in life is reflected in the Bible in a form of writing called a "lament." "Biblical lament can offer us hope in a way that connects us with God in an intimate manner." [Helping Youth Grieve, pg. 10] Jesus even cried out a lament while he was dying on the cross... "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"
DOODLE PRAYER FOR YOUTH So how can we put our grief and pain into words? In Sketches of Prayer on page 2, try the artistic expression of Word Collage. Grab some paper, markers, pen or pencil and spend some quiet time with God. Begin to meditate on the question: "What am I confused by, frustrated by or down about lately?" As ideas, words, phrases, or pictures come to you, grab the markers and begin doodling. Let the words flow, be honest and be creative! STORYBOOK FOR CHILDREN "Tear Soup - A Recipe for Healing After Loss" As we process grief, it takes time. The book "Tear Soup" centers around a wise, old Grandy who has just suffered a huge loss in her life and she is cooking up her own kind of "tear soup." This book helps children by providing a visual for understanding the grief process. If your child is grieving or has a friend who is grieving here are some tips for how to cook your own tear soup. The book and DVD will be available in the church library or may be purchased here. |
