Happy New Year Parents!
Have you ever built a house or added an addition to your home? Without a proper foundation, your completed project will likely have issues. Foundations can bow, crack or tilt if the foundation is not secure. It can cause water leaks, allow pesky varmits access into your home, crack interior walls and doorways... the list can get long. Even an excellently designed structure cannot stand on a bad foundation.
In Matthew 7:24-27, Jesus warns us to build our lives on a solid foundation. The two lives Jesus compares have several points in common: they both build, they both hear Jesus' teaching, and they both experience the same set of circumstances in life. The difference between them isn't caused by ignorance, but by one ignoring what Jesus said. Externally their lives may look the same, but the lasting structural differences will be revealed by the storms they experience in life. Like a house of cards, the foolish man's life crumbles. Most people do not deliberately set out to build on an inferior foundation; instead, they just don't think about where their life is going.
Talking to someone we trust, who is able to sit and listen to our pain can be freeing and the beginning of healing. When the world is closing in on us when we are hurting or grieving, or when we're at our lowest, we want to have friends sit with us. We don't need them to be wise or to offer advice, only have the ability to be with us, to enter our world, to sit with us in our ashes and to listen to us.

Lord, make us willing and ready to let go of bad habits and destructive behaviour in our lives. Give us your refreshing, healing, restoring rest in knowing that you always have our back. Amen.
